What it does
Hands-Free Notebook uses Apple's built-in dictation and automatically presses Enter/Return when you stop talking. That means you can speak into any app or web chat box (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, etc.) completely hands-free.
Normal dictation tools can't press send in browser chat boxes. This one can.
Settings
- Pause timing: choose how long it waits after you stop talking before it presses Enter, from 1 to 5 seconds.
- Where it works: limit it to the built-in notebook only, or have it work everywhere.
Voice commands
- Say
silence offto turn auto-Enter off. - Say
silence onto turn auto-Enter back on.
The "silence" prefix is there so these commands never conflict with normal speech or with dictation's own commands.
Tip: say silence off before filling out forms or password fields, since the app presses Enter when you pause.
Permissions
Hands-Free Notebook needs three permissions:
- Microphone
- Speech Recognition
- Accessibility – needed to press Enter in other apps.
How to turn them on
- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Go to Microphone and turn on Hands-Free Notebook.
- Go to Speech Recognition and turn on Hands-Free Notebook.

- After granting Accessibility, quit and reopen Hands-Free Notebook.
FAQ
- Why does it need Accessibility?
- Accessibility is what lets the app press Enter in other apps. Without it, it can't send your text for you.
- How do I stop it from pressing Enter?
- Say
silence off. Saysilence onwhen you want auto-Enter back. - How do I change the pause before it presses Enter?
- Set the pause timing anywhere from 1 to 5 seconds in the app's settings.
- Does it work in browser chat boxes?
- Yes. That's the main point of the app. It works in web chat boxes like ChatGPT, Claude, and Copilot, as long as it's set to work everywhere instead of only in the built-in notebook.
- It isn't pressing Enter. What should I check?
- Make sure the Accessibility permission is turned on for Hands-Free Notebook (then quit and reopen the app), and make sure silence is on by saying
silence on. Also check whether it's limited to the built-in notebook only. - Why do the commands start with "silence"?
- So they never conflict with normal speech or with dictation's own commands.
